MIB suspends BARC TV ratings across all genres pending licence renewal

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has suspended the Broadcast Audience Research Council’s (BARC) television ratings across all genres until the organisation’s licence is renewed under the newly introduced Television Ratings Policy, 2026. The directive requires BARC to halt the publication and distribution of audience measurement data with immediate effect.

The suspension applies to every category of television broadcasting, including general entertainment, news, films, music and regional programming. It follows the implementation of a revised regulatory framework that introduces stricter compliance requirements, enhanced auditing procedures and expanded obligations for metered households. BARC must meet these conditions before its licence can be formally renewed and ratings activity can resume.

The freeze extends beyond the earlier halt on news ratings, creating a period of uncertainty for broadcasters, advertisers and media agencies who rely on weekly TRP figures for scheduling, commissioning and commercial decision‑making. Industry stakeholders are expected to adjust short‑term strategies while awaiting clarity on the timeline for BARC’s reinstatement.

The MIB has indicated that ratings may only restart once BARC demonstrates full adherence to the updated policy and receives approval for continued operation.
