Who is Captain Smit Machchhar? Indian pilot hailed a hero after saving Flydubai flight
Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being hailed as a hero after his courage and presence of mind helped save the lives of 174 people aboard an Israel-bound Flydubai flight.
According to reports, the Mumbai-born captain was stabbed during a violent attack inside the cockpit on Wednesday, but his actions proved crucial in preventing a potential catastrophe.
The attack unfolded on a flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when Captain Machchhar was allegedly assaulted by his co-pilot. Reports indicate that the aircraft entered a severe nosedive during the incident, creating panic among those on board.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Machchhar remained focused on the safety of the passengers and crew. In a remarkable display of courage, he fought back against the attacker and managed to unlock and open the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene.
That decision proved critical. Crew members and several passengers rushed to assist, helping to overpower and restrain the attacker. Two off-duty Flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft then stepped in and helped bring the situation under control, ensuring the flight could land safely.
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia, where emergency services were waiting. Captain Machchhar was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition, according to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
The incident has attracted international attention, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly describing the Indian aviator as a “true hero” and crediting him with helping save the lives of everyone on board.
For many in India, the story has become a source of national pride. Captain Machchhar grew up in Mumbai, where his parents still live. His aviation journey began in 2008 when he enrolled at Mainland Air, an aviation college in Dunedin, New Zealand. After completing his training, he joined SpiceJet in 2011 and went on to build a successful career as a commercial pilot before moving to Dubai and joining Flydubai in 2022.
Now recovering in Saudi Arabia, Captain Machchhar is being widely praised for the calmness, bravery and professionalism that helped avert disaster and protect the 174 people aboard the flight.
