Ofcom proposes new rules for voice assistants selecting UK radio stations
Ofcom has launched a consultation on a new Code of Practice governing how designated voice assistant services select and provide access to UK radio stations.
The proposed rules, introduced under the Media Act 2024, are aimed at ensuring listeners can access UK radio services when using voice-controlled devices and platforms.
The framework covers “designated radio selection services”, which can include voice assistants used to search for and play radio stations online.
The issue is increasingly relevant to broadcasters as listening continues to move towards online platforms, connected devices and smart speakers.

Under the proposed code, designated services would have obligations relating to the selection and availability of UK radio services, helping prevent platforms from unfairly influencing which stations listeners receive.
Ofcom is now seeking views from broadcasters, platforms and other stakeholders. The consultation closes at 17:00 on 9th November 2026.
Ofcom is expected to publish its final Code of Practice and accompanying statement in 2027.
