Alia Bhatt to play an assassin in ‘Alpha’
With the release of Yash Raj Films’ thriller ‘Alpha’ drawing nearer, Alia Bhatt is reportedly taking on one of the most demanding roles of her career, that of a purpose‑built assassin. If confirmed, it would mark a striking departure from every character previously introduced in the YRF Spy Universe, where protagonists have traditionally been spies rather than killers shaped from childhood.
A senior trade source familiar with the project told Bollywood Hungama that the film represents a bold creative shift for the franchise. “Alpha is definitely a major turn for the YRF Spy Universe,” the source said. “It presents a lead character who is an assassin, not a spy that we have seen all leads play earlier. For the first time, Aditya Chopra is giving us an origin story that introduces a character that is more grey, more of an anti‑hero in tonality. It is refreshing because otherwise it would be extremely boring for us to watch.”
The source added that the film’s approach is intentionally disruptive. “This is definitely going to deliver a shock value to us. This is not a conventional approach to build a hero, and it’s brave to even think of building out a female action character like this. This is clearly a thought through creative pivot and a much necessary one for the universe that has delivered around 3,269 crore of business so far.”

‘Alpha’ also features Sharvari in a key role alongside Bhatt, with Bobby Deol cast as the antagonist and Anil Kapoor appearing in a pivotal part. Filming is already underway, positioning the project as one of the most ambitious additions to the YRF Spy Universe to date.
