Aamir Khan faces backlash after fatwa and ‘love jihad’ claims over his marriage to Gauri Spratt

Aamir Khan’s marriage to Bengaluru entrepreneur Gauri Spratt on 5th July has sparked a sharp religious and political backlash.

The controversy escalated after Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued a fatwa declaring the interfaith union “impermissible”, stating: “Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair Muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai.” His remarks triggered wider criticism, with some Hindu groups accusing the actor of “love jihad”.

Aamir responded firmly, clarifying that none of his wives – Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao or Gauri Spratt – ever converted to Islam and that all three marriages were civil. He also noted that Gauri is Christian, “not even a practising Christian”, countering claims she is Hindu. He described his family as “inclusive”, pointing out that several relatives are married across faiths.

The debate continues to dominate headlines, fuelled by religious commentary and political rhetoric surrounding interfaith marriages.
