Aamir Khan announces ‘Silkyara 41’, a film inspired by the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue
Aamir Khan has officially announced ‘Silkyara 41’, the latest project from Aamir Khan Productions, inspired by the extraordinary 2023 rescue operation in Uttarakhand in which 41 workers were freed from the collapsed Silkyara tunnel. The film marks a significant Indo‑Australian collaboration and will be directed by Kabir Khan, with production support from Mind Blowing Films and Kabir Khan Films.
Speaking about the project, Aamir Khan said the real‑life incident had deeply moved him, calling it “a story of courage, resilience, ingenuity and humanity in the face of impossible odds.” He added: “We are especially proud to announce it on this historic day, as India and Australia open a new chapter in their bilateral relationship. It feels fitting that today we announce this wonderful film to be created by our two countries… celebrating international cooperation and the triumph of the human spirit.”
Kabir Khan described the rescue as “one of the most extraordinary human dramas to emerge in recent times,” noting that the emotional stakes were what drew him to the project. “What struck me most was the human dimension — the families waiting, the workers trapped inside, and the remarkable individuals who came together to make the rescue possible,” he said.

The screenplay is being written by Australian screenwriter Andrew Anastasios and will highlight the pivotal role played by Professor Arnold Dix, the internationally recognised tunnelling expert who led key aspects of the rescue. Reflecting on the operation, Dix said: “The Silkyara rescue was never about one person. It was about people from different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds coming together with a single purpose — to bring 41 workers home safely.”
