Vicky Kaushal on fatherhood: “My heart sank” as he returned to work

Vicky Kaushal has spoken at length about becoming a father last November, providing a direct and personal account of how fatherhood has reshaped his daily life, his sense of responsibility and his understanding of his own upbringing.

In an interview with The Nod Magazine, Kaushal explained that becoming a parent has given him a new appreciation for the values his own parents instilled in him, saying, “When I look at my upbringing in retrospect, I understand so many things that they were right about. We weren’t financially flying. So, there was that pressure. But they had the responsibility of instilling the right values in me.”

He added that the weight of that responsibility now rests with him, noting, “It occurs to me at the most random moments that that [instilling the right values] is now my responsibility towards my son. He is going to learn by observing how his parents are thinking, talking, and behaving. So, I’ve realised whatever you want to see reflected in him has to come in your actions rather than words.”

Kaushal also described the emotional difficulty of returning to work after taking six weeks off following the birth of his son, Vihaan. Recalling the moment he had to leave home for a four‑day shoot, he said, “My heart sank. It was hard.” He went on to reflect on how quickly parenthood brings new emotions to the surface, explaining, “There are so many new feelings that surface almost on a daily basis, because being a parent is new to me.”
