Suman Kalyanpur passes away, aged 89

Veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur has died at the age of 89 at her residence in Mumbai. The singer, known for her distinctive voice and a career that spanned more than six decades, passed away due to age‑related ailments, according to family sources.

Kalyanpur was regarded as one of the most respected voices of the golden era of Hindi cinema, remembered for songs such as “Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche”, “Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhi Se”, and “Dil Gham Se Jal Raha Hai”. Her work with leading composers of the 1950s, 60s and 70s earned her a reputation for precision, grace and emotional depth.

Tributes have been shared widely across the music and film fraternity. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari described her death as “heartbreaking” and said it was “a great loss to the Indian music world.” Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said her voice “will continue to resonate in the firmament of Indian music,” adding that her contribution “remains unmatched in its purity and elegance.” Singer Shankar Mahadevan wrote that she was “a voice of extraordinary beauty” and that her songs “will live for generations.”
