Ofcom consults on proposed news reduction on the BBC Asian Network
Ofcom has launched a consultation regarding the BBC’s request to reduce its news and current affairs commitments on the BBC Asian Network.
Earlier this year, the BBC Asian Network announced plans to refocus its programming to better serve younger listeners. The broadcaster aims to invest in more distinctive content, including new music from UK-based British Asian artists in key slots, alongside high-impact speech programming.
As part of these changes, the BBC intends to decommission the Ankur Desai show, which airs Monday to Thursday from 15:00 to 18:00, along with its associated programmes. In its place, a newly commissioned news and current affairs programme will be introduced on Monday evenings. Additionally, the network plans to increase the number of Newsbeat bulletins and broadcast standalone current affairs content.
Consequently, the BBC has requested a reduction in the news and current affairs quota for the BBC Asian Network, proposing a shift from at least 1,224 hours to a minimum of 675 hours per financial year.
Ofcom acknowledged that audiences—particularly those under 35—are increasingly migrating to online platforms. In response, the regulator emphasised the importance of ensuring that BBC news and current affairs content remains accessible to audiences in formats that resonate with them.

Ofcom stated that the adjusted quotas would be an appropriate means for the BBC to fulfil its Mission and promote its Public Purposes, with the proposed changes aligning with evolving audience needs. As a result, Ofcom is inclined to approve the BBC’s request.
However, the regulator expects the BBC to monitor the impact of these changes on audience engagement. Ofcom has also assured that it will continue to assess how the BBC serves its audiences across all platforms.
Ofcom has invited public feedback on the proposals, with the consultation open until 26th June 2025. After reviewing responses, the final decision will be published later in the summer.
