Sanjay Gupta’s wife reacts to daughter’s viral video at filmmaker’s funeral

Anuradha Lekhi Gupta, wife of late filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, has addressed a viral video allegedly showing their daughter making an obscene gesture towards paparazzi at his funeral.

The footage, which circulated on social media following Gupta’s funeral in Mumbai on Saturday, reportedly shows a girl making a middle-finger gesture towards photographers gathered outside the venue.

In a statement shared by filmmaker Milap Zaveri on Monday, Anuradha explained that her children had been deeply distressed by the sudden media attention during an extremely difficult period for the family.

“Having grown up away from the glare of the limelight and the intrusive nature of paparazzi culture, they were deeply distressed by the sudden intrusion into their privacy at such a difficult time,” she said.

She acknowledged that some of the children’s reactions may have been directed towards members of the media, adding: “I sincerely regret any hurt this may have caused.”

Anuradha also appealed to media organisations and social media users to remove footage that could have a lasting emotional impact on her children.

“I humbly request everyone to understand these reactions for what they truly are – the expressions of grieving children struggling to come to terms with an irreparable loss,” she added.

The statement concluded with a request for privacy, compassion and space as the family comes to terms with Gupta’s sudden death.

The filmmaker, best known for directing films including ‘Kaante’, ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ and ‘Kaabil’, died on 30 October following a fatal head injury sustained in an accidental fall at his Mumbai residence.
