Salman Khan 60th Special: Six playback singers whose vocals suited the actor perfectly

Over the years Khan has had so many singers do playback for him but there were six in particular that helped make the songs in his films even more special. On the occasion of Salman Khan’s 60th birthday, BizAsiaLive.Com will look at those playback singers whose vocals suited the actor very much.

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam
Who can forget the early 90s when this voice was a rage. From the beginning of Khan’s film career this singer was the one who gave him all his hit songs. From mere rang mein rangnewali to tum ladki ho taken from ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989). To dekha hai pehli baar saajan ki ankhon mein pyar from ‘Saajan’ (1991) all these songs became extremely popular. Balasubrahmanyam’s vocals suited Khan so much that when he appeared on screen one naturally expected to hear the vocals of this artist.

1994 was perhaps the last year when Balasubrahmanyam sang for Khan. One was for the romantic, family film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ and the second was the comedy classic ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. For the latter film both songs were very entertaining, one was yeh raat aur yeh doorie which was a duet with Asha Bhosle and the second was a duet with Debanish Dasgupta for do mastane chale.

Kumar Sanu
It was a new phase when Sanu began to sing for Khan. Before then not many artists had sung for Khan but once Sanu sang for the actor there was no going back. Romantic songs like kitna pyar tumhe karte hai from ‘Ek Ladka Ek Ladki’ (1992), o jaana na jaana from ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’ (1998) and teri chunariya from ‘Hello Brother’ (1999) were all big hits and loved by the audience.

One song that deserves a special mention is saajanji ghar aaye from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998). Many would agree while all the songs on the album are beautiful, this one has a special place in everyone’s hearts. No one knew that Khan would be doing a cameo in the film so when the song began and Khan made his entry the audience was ecstatic. Although it was a very small role that not many wanted to accept, Khan took on the character of Aman Mehra making it one of his most memorable roles till date.

Kamaal Khan
The first time Kamaal Khan sung for Salman many actually thought that the actor had sung the song himself. The popular track o o jane jaana taken from the 1998 film ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’ became a hit for so many reasons. One reason was, it was the first time Salman had removed his shirt and was dancing on stage in a pair of jeans with a guitar in his hand, he looked like a pop star. This was because the shirt he was supposed to wear was a little too tight but in the end it all worked out and this look of his became iconic.

Secondly was of course the vocals of Kamaal Khan who sang so well that people felt that Salman had sung the song. Kamaal has sung for Salman various times but this song is the one that people remember him for. Another memorable song by him is laga prem rog from ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’ (2005).

Abhijeet Bhattacharya
While both Khan and Bhattacharya may not be collaborating any time soon it would be an injustice to not speak of their earlier work which was so good it deserves some recognition. ‘Baaghi: A Rebel For Love’ (1990) was the first film in which Bhattacharya had sung for Khan after that throughout the 90s the singer sung many songs for the actor. Who can forget the energetic dance number tan tana tan tan tara from ‘Judwaa’ (1997) and the romantic song chori chori sapno mein from ‘Chal Mere Bhai’ (1999).

If there’s one song of theirs that reached great heights then it would be chunnari chunnari from ‘Biwi No 1’ (1999). It also featured the famous singer Anuradha Sriram who sung for the actress Sushmita Sen. From the picturisation to the vocals everything about the song was a sensation. The song was even used in another film a few years later such was its popularity especially at weddings.

Anu Malik
Whenever Malik sung for Khan the song would usually be very upbeat and party like. Some examples would be oonchi hai building from ‘Judwaa’ (1997), the title track of ‘Jaanam Samjha Karo (1999) and another memorable song ek garam chai ki pyali ho from ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega’ (2000). His style is unlike other artists but for some reason it works for Khan.

Udit Narayan
It may feel as though Narayan hasn’t sung many songs for Khan but that isn’t the case. If one was to look back there are many classics with each one more romantic than the other. Pyasa kuen ke paas from ‘Dil Tera Aashiq’ (1993), the title track of ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega’ (2000), hum tumko nigahon mein from ‘Garv: Pride And Honour’ (2004) are just some of the songs that he has sung for Khan.

There are many songs but the one that really stood out was the title track of ‘Tere Naam’ (2003). It made people cry and touched their hearts. The film is regarded as one of Khan’s best and a favourite of many.
