Reliance expected to merge Disney+ Hotstar content into JioCinema
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is reportedly considering the integration of Disney+ Hotstar content into its JioCinema platform, as part of an ambitious merger plan. According to the Economic Times, this strategic move, pending regulatory approval, would consolidate RIL’s focus on a single, more robust streaming platform with an enhanced content strategy.
Despite Disney+ Hotstar being the leading OTT platform in India with over 500 million downloads on Google Play Store, and JioCinema boasting over 100 million downloads, RIL is expected to prioritise the development of a unified platform. This approach is aimed at creating a stronger and more competitive presence in the streaming market.

The merger is currently awaiting approval from key regulatory bodies, including the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). To mitigate potential concerns regarding market dominance, RIL has also expressed a willingness to shut down certain TV channels in Hindi and regional markets. This move is likely intended to address regulatory and market competition issues, paving the way for a smooth transition towards a consolidated digital entertainment offering.
