Ranveer Singh defends exit from ‘Don 3’ amid Rs. 40 crore compensation row
Ranveer Singh’s abrupt departure from Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don 3’ has become a major talking point, with reports suggesting that Excel Entertainment expected the actor to pay Rs. 40 crore in compensation after walking out of the project. Singh is said to have argued that he was not liable to pay anything, as he too had incurred a loss by turning down Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Baiju Bawra’ due to the prolonged delays surrounding ‘Don 3’.
A source told Bollywood Hungama that the main dispute centred on the demand that Singh compensate Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani for the losses incurred during pre‑production. According to the source, Singh maintained that he had not taken “a single paisa” from the producers, making the idea of repaying such a large sum unreasonable.
The source went on to explain that Singh had spent nearly a year preparing for Bhansali’s ‘Baiju Bawra’, turning down several other projects in the process. When the film was eventually shelved and Bhansali moved on to ‘Love & War’, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, Singh was not compensated for the time he had invested. He reportedly argued that this is simply the nature of the industry: films are delayed, abandoned or reworked, and no one is reimbursed for lost opportunities.

The source added that Singh also referenced reports claiming Shah Rukh Khan had been approached for ‘Don 3’. He argued that had Khan agreed to return, he himself would have been replaced without any compensation, reinforcing his stance that he should not be held liable for the Rs. 40 crore demand.
