Ofcom launches call to potentially reform broadcast regulation
Ofcom has launched a call for input on how broadcast regulation might be reformed to better support growth and innovation across the sector. The regulator noted that much of the current framework was designed for a world of linear, scheduled programming, and further change is needed to ensure audiences remain protected wherever they consume content.
The consultation will focus on three key areas: licensing, advertising and content standards. Ofcom is particularly keen to hear from stakeholders about how existing rules affect their businesses, where regulation may no longer be necessary, and where it could be restricting innovation or competition.
Responses must be submitted by 15 January 2026. Feedback will be considered alongside wider market developments and the Government’s forthcoming decision on the future distribution of television.
