Gurinder Chadha’s ‘Christmas Karma’ meets with scathing reviews
Gurinder Chadha’s festive musical ‘Christmas Karma’ has been met with a wave of scathing reviews, with critics describing it as one of the weakest seasonal releases in recent memory.
A modern reimagining of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, the film is set in London and infused with Bollywood-inspired spectacle. It stars Kunal Nayyar as the miserly businessman Eshaan Sood, alongside an ensemble cast including Eva Longoria, Billy Porter, Boy George, Hugh Bonneville, and Danny Dyer.
Despite its star power and ambitious concept, the reception has been brutal. One critic branded the film “the worst thing since Herod”, while another dismissed it as having “as much Yuletide spirit as a dead rat in the eggnog”. The Telegraph went further, awarding a rare zero-star rating and calling it “the worst movie since Cats”. Empire noted that although Chadha’s multicultural lens offered an intriguing twist, “we don’t really need another one”, suggesting the adaptation added little to the countless versions of ‘A Christmas Carol’ already in existence.

Chadha, celebrated for earlier successes such as ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and ‘Bride and Prejudice’, has found herself at the centre of a rare backlash. With its clumsy execution, overblown musical numbers and awkward visual effects, ‘Christmas Karma’ has struggled to impress, leaving it firmly on the cinematic “naughty list” this festive season.
