Gurinder Chadha confirms ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ sequel in the works

Following England’s triumphant victory in the UEFA Women’s European Championship 2025, filmmaker Gurinder Chadha has confirmed that a sequel to her iconic film ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ is officially in development, two decades after the original release.

Speaking to the BBC, Chadha remarked, “We’ve helped change the landscape for women in sport, so I felt this was the right moment to revisit the characters.”

She noted how much has evolved since the original, though certain attitudes remain unchanged, “A lot has shifted, but I believe many still think women shouldn’t play football. There are those who simply don’t take it seriously—even with the Lionesses soaring.”

“I’ve waited quite some time,” she added, “but then I saw the Euros, saw the Lionesses, and thought—it’s time.”

Chadha has provisionally set 2027 for the release of the sequel, coinciding with both the 25th anniversary of ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Brazil.
