Filmmaker & former CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani passes away

Pahlaj Nihalani, veteran film producer and former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed that he passed away in Mumbai after a period of illness, marking the end of a long and influential career in the industry.

Nihalani began producing films in the early 1980s and quickly became known for backing commercially successful, star‑driven projects. Among his most notable productions were ‘Ilzaam’ (1986), which marked Govinda’s debut and became a major hit; ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1992), a popular action‑romance that further cemented Govinda’s rise; and ‘Aankhen’ (1993), one of the highest‑grossing Hindi films of its year. He also produced ‘Andaz’ (1994) and ‘Aag Hi Aag’ (1987), both of which enjoyed strong box‑office runs and contributed to his reputation as a reliable maker of mass‑appeal cinema.
