72nd National Film Awards: ‘Article 370’ leads winners as Kartik Aaryan, Mammootty, Yami Gautam honoured
The 72nd National Film Awards were announced in New Delhi, with this year’s winners and finalists reflecting a strong year for both mainstream and regional cinema. ‘Article 370’ took the top honour as Best Feature Film, while Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared Best Actor. Yami Gautam won Best Actress for her role in ‘Article 370’.
In the Best Feature Film race, the finalists included ‘Article 370’, ‘Dunki’, ‘12th Fail’, ‘Aattam’ and ‘Sapta Sagaradaache Ello’, representing a mix of commercial successes and critically acclaimed regional titles. The Best Actor category featured Kartik Aaryan for ‘Chandu Champion’, Mammootty for ‘Turbo’, Vikrant Massey for ‘12th Fail’, Fahadh Faasil for ‘Aattam’ and Vicky Kaushal for ‘Sam Bahadur’. Best Actress finalists included Yami Gautam, Alia Bhatt for ‘Jigra’, Parvathy Thiruvothu for ‘Ullozhukku’, Mrunal Thakur for ‘Family Star’ and Sai Pallavi for ‘Gargi’.
The Best Director finalists were Aditya Suhas Jambhale for ‘Article 370’, Rajkumar Hirani for ‘Dunki’, Vidhu Vinod Chopra for ‘12th Fail’, Mahesh Narayanan for ‘Aattam’ and Hemanth Rao for ‘Sapta Sagaradaache Ello’. In the supporting categories, the Best Supporting Actor finalists were Pankaj Tripathi, Prakash Raj, Roshan Mathew, Deepak Dobriyal and Shine Tom Chacko, while Best Supporting Actress finalists included Shabana Azmi, Seema Pahwa, Nimisha Sajayan, Amruta Subhash and Kani Kusruti.
Regional cinema delivered a strong showing across Malayalam, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali and Kannada entries, underscoring the awards’ broad reach. Technical categories such as editing, cinematography, sound design, background score and production design also featured a wide slate of finalists, with both established names and first‑time nominees recognised.
