Mahesh Bhatt confirms retirement from film direction

Mahesh Bhatt has confirmed that he has retired from film direction. In recent interviews, he stated clearly that he will not return to directing, saying, “Because it is so gratifying to talk about movies so passionately.” He also criticised the increasingly formula‑driven nature of modern filmmaking, remarking, “When you are to make content according to certain designs which have been pre‑decided, then what is the role of an artiste?”

Bhatt’s last directorial release was ‘Sadak 2’ in 2020, and he has since shifted his focus to writing, mentoring and production. He remains active in the industry, recently presenting ‘Naam – To Live is War’, described as a spiritual successor to his 1986 film ‘Naam’. His retirement applies specifically to direction; he continues to work in other creative capacities.
