Karan Johar’s comments about not making films like ‘Homebound’ again irk online users

Filmmaker Karan Johar has faced criticism online following his remarks about not pursuing films like ‘Homebound’ again. In a recent conversation with Komal Nahta, Johar reflected on the evolving priorities at Dharma Productions, particularly after selling 50 per cent of the company to Adar Poonawalla. He admitted that financial accountability now plays a greater role in decision-making, stating, “Not profitable? Don’t do it.”

However, Johar’s comments have not sat well with many cinema enthusiasts, who took to social media to express their disappointment. Netizens accused the filmmaker of poor planning and mismanagement during the release of ‘Homebound’, citing limited screen availability and lacklustre promotion as key reasons for its underperformance.

Adding to the frustration, several critics pointed out that Dharma Productions released ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ just a week after ‘Homebound’, allegedly diverting attention and resources away from the smaller, more nuanced film. Many felt this undermined the significance of ‘Homebound’, which had been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars and had enjoyed a successful run at international festivals.

Johar’s remarks have reignited debate around the balance between creative integrity and commercial viability in Bollywood, with audiences calling for greater support for meaningful cinema.
