Harshad Chopda on being sexually assaulted: “I used to say I am scared of gays”
Harshad Chopda has revealed that he was sexually assaulted as a young boy by someone his parents trusted, a memory he carried in silence for years.
Recalling the incident, Harshad said, “I was sexually assaulted when I was a kid. I was left alone by my parents with someone they trusted. I was scared, I didn’t know what had happened to me. I never spoke about it because I thought I had done something wrong.”
He explained that the confusion and fear of childhood prevented him from understanding the incident or confiding in anyone. The emotional scars, he said, stayed with him well into adulthood before he finally found the courage to speak about them publicly.
Harshad then addressed the inmates directly, adding context to how the trauma shaped his early behaviour: “I used to say I am scared of gays, this is why, after all this that happened.” He clarified that this fear was not rooted in prejudice, but in the unresolved trauma and confusion he carried as a child, a misunderstanding he has since outgrown as he processed the incident with maturity and awareness.

He further emphasised the importance of creating safe spaces for children to speak openly if they ever feel uncomfortable. Harshad said that encouraging children to express themselves and ensuring they know they will be believed, can make a significant difference in preventing long‑term emotional damage.
