Biz Perspective: JioHotstar’s smart approach turns up the heat in the UK

For years, the UK South Asian broadcast landscape has operated with a clear divide: linear channels on one side, digital platforms on the other, often with little synergy between them. JioStar’s latest move with JioHotstar finally breaks that pattern, and the impact is already visible.

The UK rebrand from Utsav to Star created a single, recognisable identity across its linear portfolio. Aligning Hotstar with the Jio brand was the next logical step, bringing the UK operation in line with its India counterpart. What had been missing and frankly overdue was cross‑promotion. ZEE5 adopted this strategy early, linking ZEE TV and ZEE5 in the UK. JioStar’s channels, however, had been sitting without any digital push. That gap has now closed.

And JioHotstar hasn’t arrived quietly. The timing is deliberate: six ‘Bigg Boss’ editions launching simultaneously, including the flagship Hindi version with Salman Khan. Each edition carries 24×7 exclusive live streaming, a first for the UK market at this scale. Add to that the introduction of voting, connecting UK viewers directly with the India broadcast ecosystem — a move that fundamentally changes how diaspora audiences engage with the franchise.

The biggest disruption, however, is technical. JioHotstar’s arrival on the Sky platform marks a milestone no South Asian broadcaster has achieved before. Star Plus was the first Asian channel to join Sky’s bouquet in the 2000s; now JioHotstar becomes the first South Asian streamer available as an app on Sky Q, Sky Glass and Sky Stream. Accessibility is no longer a barrier and that alone shifts competitive dynamics.

Beyond the headline features, JioHotstar’s strength remains its sheer volume of content. With programming from both Star and Colors channels in India, UK audiences will see a larger catalogue than ever before. Upcoming seasons of ‘Koffee With Karan’ and ‘India Ke Top 1%’ will run alongside India, reinforcing the platform’s premium positioning.

JioHotstar’s UK strategy is not subtle, it’s a clear attempt to reset the market. Whether rivals respond with equal force remains to be seen, but the message is unmistakable: the era of siloed linear and digital operations is over.
