Zeenat Aman @ 70: Romantic songs filmed on the actress

Beauty queen, glamorous, charming and unique, these are some of the words used to describe this actress. From winning the title of Femina Miss India to becoming Miss Asia Pacific International in 1970, this lady went onto become a name that would forever become an icon in the world of Indian cinema. The name is non other than the mesmerising Zeenat Aman who celebrates her 70th birthday this year.

On this occasion, BizAsiaLive.com will look back at some of the romantic songs that were picturised on the actress.

Chura liye hai tumne from ‘Yaadon Ki Baraat’ (1973)
This evergreen number has seen its fair share of remakes but the original can’t be beaten. Picturised on Aman who donned a white outfit and held a guitar in her hand it remains an iconic song for many. Who can forget the intro to this song as it begins with the clinking of glasses which hadn’t been seen before but it became something memorable for the years to come. Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi’s soothing vocals made this song special as did the performance by Aman and Vijay Arora who was cast opposite her.

Yeh vaada raha from ‘Professor Pyarelal’ (1981)
This romantic number just makes one want to drift away into a dream world. With the magical voices of Bhosle and Rafi we get to see Dharmendra and Aman wander the sights of London. This jodi was very popular and the audience enjoyed seeing them cast together. Not only did the films they work together in do very well but the songs were often popular, this being one of those gems. The lyrics were written by Rajendra Krishan and the music was created by Kalyanji- Anandji.

Do lafzon ki hai dil ki kahani from ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979)
This film was known for its soundtrack with each song becoming popular day by day, the song do lafzon ki hai in particular. This beautiful number was filmed in Venice with Amitabh Bachchan and Aman taking a ride on a gondola. While on the gondola admiring the sights, the gondolier begins to sing in Italian at which Jai (Bachchan) asks Shabnam (Aman) what he is singing. Shabnam begins to translate when Jai requests her to sing. Sung in the voice of Bhosle and Sharad Kumar it remains a song often associated with both Aman and Bhosle.

Dillagi ne di hawa from ‘Dostana’ (1980)
A classic that still manages to make hearts melt. It was the story of friendship, love and sacrifice that made this film a big hit as did the songs. Aman’s pairing with Bachchan was another one that the audience really liked to see. From the 70’s to the 80’s they worked in many hit films together sometimes paired opposite each other and sometimes as characters who meet each other by chance. This song was well known when it released and even till date remains a favourite of many.

Main na bhoolunga from ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan’ (1974)
There were two versions of this song with one being the sad version when the characters meet each other after a long time in different circumstances. It is said that the lyricist Santosh Anand won the award for the best lyricist for this very song. The song almost is like a promise, a vow that two individuals are making to one another. Sheetal (Aman) and Bharat (Manoj Kumar) love one another but one is bounded by helplessness while the other by desire. The first version of this song is when the couple have expressed their love for one another and are singing live on Television. Both the lyrics and the vocals by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar blow the listener away.

Panna ki tamanna from ‘Heera Panna’ (1973)
Kumar and Mangeshkar reunited in this film with the romantic number Panna ki tamanna (Panna’s desire). Panna (Aman) has stolen a diamond and has hidden it in Heera’s (Dev Anand) car without his knowledge. He asks the reason why she decided to trust him, a stranger she hardly knows and travel with him. Her reason is Heera, which has two meanings. Heera (Anand) is the man she is travelling with and also the diamond, the real reason is the diamond but she pretends that she has begun to like Heera. It was a sweet song with the very young Aman acting playful.

Aise na mujhe tum dekho from ‘Darling Darling’ (1977)
The title of this song may sound familiar for many as it was remade and used in the film ‘Wajah Tum Ho’ (2016). The new version was popular but it could never reach the heights of the golden oldie. The original song was sung by Kumar with R D Burman composing the music. The vocals of Kumar and the combination of the guitar makes one melt. It is said that the song was filmed at a famous fort in India which can be seen throughout the song. Visually the song has comedic elements with Jeevan following both Anand and Aman who act like they’re a romantic couple.

Hum dono do premi from ‘Ajanabee’ (1974)
Again another masterpiece in the voice of Mangeshkar and Kumar, this song was the first of its kind to be filmed completely on a moving train. Rashmi (Aman) and Rohit (Rajesh Khanna) can be seen escaping the police on their way to lead a life of love and happiness. Khanna and Aman had worked in numerous films together but this was the first time they were cast together.

Team BizAsia wishes Zeenat Aman a happy 70th birthday!
