Subhash Ghai confirms script for ‘Taal 2’ is ready
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has officially revealed that the long‑awaited sequel to his 1999 musical drama ‘Taal’ has taken a major step forward, with the script now ready.
Speaking in a recent interview, Ghai explained that he has been asked about a sequel for more than a decade, and that interest from younger audiences has only intensified. As he put it, “I have been facing this question for 15 years—‘When are you going to make Taal again?’ Us Taal ki jo energy hai, it is so powerful that even Gen Z today is asking me to make it again.”
Despite the excitement, Ghai emphasised that the project cannot be rushed. He noted that although the script is “almost complete”, the team is still considering whether this is the right moment to begin production. “But the easier the subject of Taal seems, the more difficult it is in reality. Uska poora script hum almost complete kar chuke hain, aur abhi hum soch rahe hain ki yeh sahi samay hai—maybe we should make it. In order to make it, purity is very important.”
Ghai also addressed speculation about whether he might cast Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the stars of the 2025 hit ‘Saiyaara’, in the sequel. While he praised their performances, he made it clear that ‘Taal 2’ requires a different approach. He explained that the innocence and freshness of the cast were central to the original film’s impact, and that the sequel must preserve that quality. “Ahaan Panday aur Aneet Padda ab star ban chuke hain. Par Taal 2 mein characters naye lagne chahiye. It is the need of the character.”

The director also reflected on why casting was so crucial to the success of the first film, recalling that Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai were newcomers at the time, which brought a natural purity to their performances. He suggested that the same principle will guide the sequel’s casting decisions.
