‘Soohe Ve Cheere Waleya’: Nirvair Pannu’s new Punjabi film now streaming on Chaupal

Chaupal has added a new Punjabi feature to its catalogue with ‘Soohe Ve Cheere Waleya’, a period drama set near the India–Pakistan border in the 1990s.

The film follows Sooba, played by singer‑actor Nirvair Pannu, a young shopkeeper whose routine life is shaped by a quiet longing for his ancestral land across the border.

The story begins to shift when Sooba’s radio unexpectedly picks up the poetry of a girl broadcasting from Lahore. Her verses, carried across the border through radio frequencies, create an emotional connection that neither side anticipates. The voice belongs to Naazo, portrayed by Tanu Grewal, a mute poet who communicates through her writing rather than speech. A misplaced military wireless set links the two, turning an accidental signal into a developing bond.

The film uses this relationship to explore themes tied to Partition and the lasting impact of borders on ordinary lives. While the narrative centres on a love story, it also reflects on separation, memory and the ways in which art travels beyond physical boundaries.

Nirvair Pannu delivers a restrained performance as Sooba, relying on subtle expression rather than dramatic dialogue. Tanu Grewal’s portrayal of Naazo adds emotional weight, with her character’s silence becoming a key part of the storytelling. Bir Singh appears in a supporting role, rounding out a cast that keeps the focus on the film’s grounded tone.

Chaupal is available in the UK and globally by downloading the app on various devices, Amazon Fire TV stick, Android and Apple devices.
