Shehnaaz Gill and Jai Randhawa’s ‘Ishqnama’ trailer hints a romance written against history

‘Ishqnama’ has unveiled its trailer in Punjab, offering a first look at a sweeping cross‑border romance rooted in real events. Starring Shehnaaz Gill, Jai Randhawa and Saurabh Sachdeva, the Punjabi period drama releases across India, Canada and the UK on 24 July 2026.
Set between 1981 and 1988 along the India–Pakistan border, ‘Ishqnama’ is inspired by the true story of Nimma and Naseema, adapted from the acclaimed book Hind Pak Bordernama. The film traces the relationship between Nimma, a young Sikh poet from Indian Punjab, and Naseema, a Muslim girl from Pakistani Punjab, whose love attempts to survive the lingering wounds of Partition and the political realities that divide their worlds.
What lends the narrative an added layer of poignancy is its connection to living history. Nimma, the poet whose writings form the backbone of the story, is still alive and residing in India. Naseema is believed to have later moved to England, with efforts underway to trace her. The film positions their relationship not merely as a romance but as a testament to the endurance of human connection across borders, conflict and time.
The trailer showcases expansive visuals, a strong musical palette and emotionally charged moments that frame ‘Ishqnama’ as an epic love story built on longing, defiance and destiny. Director Arvvindr S. Khaira, making his feature debut after a decade of shaping the visual language of Indian music videos, said the story demanded a larger canvas, describing the film as the raw reality of two lovers who “rewrote history”.

Shehnaaz Gill called playing Naseema a transformative experience, describing the role as an artistic rebirth and a chance to step outside her comfort zone. Jai Randhawa noted the significance of launching the trailer in Punjab, crediting the region and its audiences for shaping his journey and expressing hope that his portrayal of Nimma honours the real story and those who have supported him.
Produced by Sourabh Rana, ‘Ishqnama’ features music by B Praak with lyrics by Jaani, adding further weight to its emotional and period‑driven tone. With its release set for 24 July 2026, the film positions itself as a major Punjabi theatrical offering, blending historical truth with a timeless, border‑defying romance.
