JioCinema app set for international launch in April?

Viacom18’s over-the-top media streaming service, JioCinema is expected to make a launch in international markets around April 2024.

BizAsiaLive.com understands that JioCinema is in the process of gaining compliance clearance before it goes live in countries like the UK and USA. Up until now, the JioCinema app has been available in the UK but the content is geo-restricted. Rival services, ZEE5 Global, Hotstar and SonyLIV have been available for years. The latter two have remained lowkey in the UK market due to a lack of marketing.

JioCinema, which is currently only available in India, has fast become the home of high-end quality content including blockbusters, spin-off show of ‘Bigg Boss’ and hundreds of hours of original fictions and non-fictions. In India, JioCinema also owns the rights for the Indian cricket team’s home international matches, the IPL cricket tournament, plus many other sporting events.

Last year, JioCinema streamed the IPL cricket series for free, which changed the landscape for broadcasters in India. This led to rival channels offering free premium content to viewers.
