Fatima Sana Shaikh opens up about her battle with bulimia

Fatima Sana Shaikh has spoken candidly about her long battle with disordered eating and its impact on her mental health. In a recent podcast conversation with Rhea Chakraborty, she revealed that she endured cycles of bingeing, starvation, and a year of bulimia, describing her relationship with food as “toxic.”

Shaikh explained that her struggles intensified after Dangal, where she had to gain weight for the role. She recalled consuming up to 3,000 calories a day while training rigorously, but after filming ended, the eating habits continued without the same level of exercise. Food, she admitted, became a source of comfort, leading to periods of uncontrolled eating and self-criticism.

Reflecting on her journey, she said: “I have had a very love-hate relationship with myself. I have been addicted to a certain image of myself… food became my comfort zone, and I could eat nonstop for hours. It still happens to me, and I’m hating myself because I have no control.”

Her openness sheds light on the pressures faced by actors to maintain physical appearances and the toll it can take on mental health.
