Bob Iger on Disney’s future in India: “We’d like to stay in that market”

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, has spoken about the future of its business in India amid reports that the company is weighing up plans for Disney Star.

It has been reported that Disney is keen to explore options, which include either selling its Star India business or tying up with another investor to scale it up.

In an earnings call for Q4/23, Iger said, “We’d like to stay in that market. But we’re also looking to see whether we can, obviously, strengthen our hand and improve the bottom line.”

He added, “We’re considering our options there. We have an opportunity to strengthen our hand. It is now maybe the most populous country in the world, or maybe just still second to China and about to pass them.”

Rumours are rife that Reliance Industries is keen to acquire some of Disney Star’s assets. Without commenting on the speculation, Iger said that the company’s linear business in India does well. He stated, “But we know that other parts of that business are challenged for us and for others. And we are looking, I’ll call it expensively.”
