Asian News becomes online paper only

To coincide with its tenth anniversary, the Asian Newspaper has ceased as the traditional print form to become an online-only publication.

The Asian News is owned by MEN Media, which is a subsidiary of the Guardian Media Group. Asian News has become the MEN Media’s first totally website publication.

Shelina Begum (pictured above) who was previously the paper’s chief reporter, has been named as the online version’s editor. Shelina, one of the very few women of Bangladesh origin to achieve a key role in the UK media, joined the group eight years ago after a period of impressive work experience on Asian News.

Outgoing Asian News editor, Steve Hammond, who is leaving the company said: “Shelina is a tremendous role model for Asian youngsters, particularly women.

“She comes from the most deprived section of British society – Bangladeshi women and has through her enthusiasm for her craft, hard work and dedication proved that anyone can succeed. She was a real find. I wish her all the luck in this new venture with Asian News.”

The Asian News website relaunches next week with a redesign and Shelina plans to boost traffic, aiming for 1 million hits a month.

“I’m really excited about the prospect of editing a totally web-based Asian News. The Asian community are huge internet users, which has been demonstrated by the number of hits on the original website.

“This is a great opportunity to engage even further with the community as we aim to enhance and build upon the interaction with readers.”
