BBC Asian Network presenter Shazia Awan is to host a brand new early evening programme on Saturdays on BBC Radio Wales, the station revealed today.

Awan, from Caerphilly, will present her show live every Saturday between 16:00 – 19:00 in a slot that launches on 20th May, and will feature topical discussion and a variety of guests.

Awan said: “I grew up listening to Radio Wales. So it’s very exciting to now be a joining the team as a presenter. Radio Wales has a fantastic summer schedule which I’m proud to be part of and for three hours every Saturday I’ll be exploring the latest news, interviewing a fascinating set of guests, from politicians to actors and bringing the views of our listeners right into the debate.”

The changes are the first made by the new Editor of Radio Wales, Colin Paterson. He said, “I’ve been impressed by Shazia’s programmes on the BBC Asian Network. She has a real ability to guide debate and draw out stories from people. I’m now looking forward to her getting people talking on Saturday afternoons.”

Wales Today and X-Ray presenter Lucy Owen will host a show on Saturday afternoons between 14:00 and 16:00 during May and June, until presenter, producer and former West End star Connie Fisher takes the helm during July and August.

From 22nd May, former BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 presenter Janice Long will also join the station for Monday – Thursday evenings. Broadcasting live between 19:00 – 22:00, she will feature live sessions and provide a platform for Welsh artists.
