Movie Review: ‘De De Pyaar De 2’

Sequels to beloved Hindi rom-coms always walk a tightrope: balancing the charm of the original with the need to tell a fresh story.

‘De De Pyaar De 2’ attempts to navigate this, bringing back the core dynamic we enjoyed in the earlier release, 2019 movie ‘De De Pyaar De’ but perhaps relying a little too heavily on formulaic laughs.

An enjoyable, light-hearted weekend watch, yes! that’s what it is, but it doesn’t quite capture the unexpected spark of its predecessor.

The Hits
Directed by Anshul Sharma and produced by T-Series Films and Luv Films, what truly works for ‘De De Pyaar De 2’ is the undeniable chemistry between the central lead pair.

Ajay Devgn (Ashish Mehra) and Rakul Preet Singh (Ayesha Khurana), have an amazing comedic timing, selling even the sillier plot points with conviction.
The film’s greatest strength is its ability to extract genuine belly laughs from domestic chaos and generational conflicts.

The overall look of the film is polished, the production houses have clearly spared no expense, giving the entire narrative a vibrant, glossy finish that makes the foreign locales and lavish sets a treat for the eyes.

The cinematography by Sudhir K Chaudhary deserves a special mention too. The camera work beautifully captures the warmth of the family scenes and the energy of the musical numbers, ensuring every frame looks rich and well-composed. The visual storytelling is clean and modern, keeping pace with the film’s quick cuts and energetic sequences.

The Misses
The main issue is the narrative’s predictability. The central conflict, this time involving a new complication introduced into the family unit, feels recycled and resolves itself exactly as you’d expect. While the comedy is often excellent, the screenplay occasionally leans on broad, loud humour instead of the subtle, character-driven wit that made the first film so smart.

The pacing in the second half, in particular, could have been tighter, as a few scenes drag their heels to hit emotional beats that haven’t been fully earned.

The music by various artists, while catchy, is mostly functional. The songs are well-integrated into the plot, but none of the tunes stand out as the kind of memorable, chart-topping hits you’d replay after leaving the theatre. They serve the moments adequately but lack lasting impact.

Direction by Sharma, has a clear vision for the humour, particularly in managing the ensemble cast, but they perhaps needed to be a little firmer in pruning the runtime and demanding a more original plot structure. It feels like a safe follow-up, which is both its biggest appeal and its greatest drawback.

Excellent Supporting Cast
The work of the supporting cast R Madhavan (Rajji Khurana) Javeed Jaaferi (Sameer Khanna) Gautami Kapoor (Mrs. Khurana) in particular is stellar. Meezaan Jafri (Aditya) deserves an applause. He plays a small part in the film, but it’s impactful.

The supporting cast are the backbone of the film, providing necessary context and often stealing scenes. Their nuanced performances, particularly those portraying the family members, ground the sometimes-absurd situations in relatability. Without their consistently strong comedic and emotional contributions, the movie would crumble.

‘De De Pyaar De 2’ is a safe, sunny and sufficiently amusing sequel that delivers exactly what you expect: a lot of heart, a lot of humour and a predictable path to a happy ending. It’s a fun ride that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and sometimes, that’s enough.
