Karan Johar set for huge family drama touted as ‘K3G 2’

Karan Johar has finalised his eighth directorial venture, and industry insiders are already calling it one of the biggest family dramas of his career. Sources have confirmed to Pinkvilla that the filmmaker has locked the script for a grand, emotionally charged saga said to be in the same tonal space as his 2001 cult classic, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.

A source reveals, “After hitting the bullseye with the romantic family comedy ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, Karan is returning to the family‑drama genre with his next. Buzz is, this will be his biggest film in terms of scale, and he has brought in the New Year by locking the script.”

The project is expected to go on floors by the end of 2026, with pre‑production beginning mid‑2026. According to the insider, the film is a high‑octane family drama with a strong romantic and emotional core. It will feature two male leads and two female leads, with casting set to begin shortly. The source adds, “This will be Dharma Productions’ marquee theatrical release, mounted on a scale befitting Karan’s vision.”

Unsurprisingly, news of Johar returning to the genre that defined his early career has already set industry circles abuzz. Adding to the excitement, a little birdie suggests the film may be titled ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 (K3G2)’, though it is too early for an official confirmation. What is certain, however, is that the film will echo the emotional grandeur of the 2001 blockbuster headlined by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.
