Kalki Koechlin taken out of her comfort zone in ‘Shanghai’

We have all seen Kalki Koechlin play very versatileroles inʉDev D۪ (2009), The Girl in Yellow Boots۪ (2010) and most recently Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara۪ (2011). Her next venture, ‘Shanghai۪ will see Koechlin play another extremely different character. With this film, the director Dibakar Banerjee definitely takes the actress out of her comfort zone.

ω_Dibakar said that I had to be ugly, but adorable. Now that was a strange mix I had to bring on screen,” Mid-Day reported the actress as saying in an interview. Banerjee even went to lengths of getting Koechlin to cut her hair extremely short in a style that really didn۪t flatter the actress. …Well, here was my moment of getting into that discomfort zone the minute my hair was cut. I used to be so depressed on waking up in the morning. I thought I looked like a complete idiot,” she says.

Talking about her character Koechlin goes on to explain, Dibakar is presenting me as someone who is not an accepted person; she is an outsider. So basically everybody stares at her and people just think that she doesn’t belong to their world.”

Due to release this year, Shanghai۪ will also star Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi.
