Head of Britain’s richest family Gopichand Hinduja dies aged 85
Gopichand Hinduja, the head of Britain’s wealthiest family and co-chairman of the Hinduja Group, has died at the age of 85.
Known widely as GP, Hinduja helped transform his father’s small textile and trading business into a global conglomerate spanning 11 sectors, including finance, energy, media, and entertainment. The Hinduja Group today employs around 200,000 people worldwide.
In a statement, the Hinduja family said: “He will leave a deep hole at the heart of our family,” adding that he would be “remembered for his formidable work.”
Under his leadership, the Hinduja family amassed an estimated net worth of £35.3 billion, topping the most recent Sunday Times Rich List. The family also ranked **11th on Forbes’ 2024 list of India’s 100 richest businesspeople**.
Hinduja was the second eldest of the four Hinduja brothers — alongside Srichand, Prakash, and Ashok — who collectively steered the group for decades. His elder brother, Srichand, passed away in 2023 at the age of 87.
