Former British Airways boss, Willie Walsh appointed as new CEO of IndiGo

IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh, former chief executive of British Airways and current Director General of the International Air Transport Association, as its next Chief Executive Officer. He will take up the position after completing his term at IATA, with his start date set for early August 2026.

In announcing the appointment, IndiGo stated that Walsh’s background in leading major international airlines made him a suitable choice for the role. The airline noted, “His experience in managing large‑scale operations and guiding organisations through complex industry challenges will support IndiGo’s next phase of development.”

Walsh expressed his enthusiasm for joining the airline, saying, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a clear vision and an impressive reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment.”

His appointment follows the departure of Pieter Elbers and comes at a time when IndiGo continues to expand its domestic and international network. Further organisational updates are expected as Walsh prepares to assume his responsibilities later in the year.
