Comedy Review: Tez Ilyas’ ‘Work in Progress’

As the business of comedy continues to grow, there’s no doubt in saying Tez Ilyas in one name that deserves a spot at the top in terms of British Asian comedians. From his many TV appearances on comedy shows and programmes, the comedian is about to embark on his first tour, after a successful season of ‘The Tez O’clock Show’. But before he gets to it, Ilyas graced the stage at the Streatham Space Project for his ‘Work In Progress’ show, trying out the new material that he plans to develop for the tour.

Despite being late, Ilyas was a hit from the get-go. Instantly interacting with the audience, he managed to a much bigger response than many would expect a comedian in this setting to gain. Taking his previous experiences of going to Paris, being responsible for his nieces and nephews and even reflecting on his past employment – and how he was made to leave; it all got the audiences giggling away. Unlike a lot of other comedians, Ilyas doesn’t pry on self-deprivation. Instead, he has this wonderful ability to get his audiences on his side, which is more impressive through his brilliant storytelling. The shock factor seems to be his game, where he delivers a line that makes one gasp – and through a funny anecdote, makes everyone see his comedic reasoning.

Relatable or not, Ilyas knows how to get his audiences thinking. His humble nature was projected throughout the night where he was able to unite his audience and, in some instances, the jokes created themselves. Projecting his own opinions and ideas, it is very easy to see that he is definitely on the right track to make it big. Taking the stage, he makes performing look easy. And if this show was anything to go by, then his tour is definitely one not to be missed.

Ilyas will begin his tour around the UK starting on 11th September. With his first London show already having sold out, the comedian has added another date for the capital on 27th November.
