BBC board member Shumeet Banerji steps down

A member of the BBC’s board has resigned, citing concerns about “governance issues” within the organisation.

In a letter, Shumeet Banerji said he had “not consulted” about the circumstances surrounding the departures of director general Tim Davie and BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness.

The BBC confirmed Banerji’s resignation on Friday. Banerji, who joined the board as a non-executive member in 2022, is the founder of an advisory and investment firm focused on technology companies and previously served as chief executive of management consultancy Booz & Company.

The BBC board, which has 12 members, is responsible for ensuring the corporation fulfils its public service remit and for setting its strategic direction.

In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: “Shumeet Banerji today notified the BBC Board of his resignation. Mr Banerji’s term on the Board as a non-executive director was due to end at the end of December and we thank him for his service. The search for a replacement is already well under way and we will update further in due course.”
