Abhishek Chaubey: “Shahid Kapoor’s role is not inspired by Honey Singh”

Shahid Kapoor - Chitta Ve - Udta Punjab

Abhishek Chaubey has opened up about the characters in his upcoming film ‘Udta Punjab’ and also denied reports that Shahid Kapoor’s character is based on Yo Yo Honey Singh.

In a recent interview with Mid-day, Chaubey explains how he and Sudip Sharma were at a police station in a village in Punjab, where the lockups were packed with addicts, aged between 17-24. They came face-to-face with a 17 year old who was a heroine addict. Chaubey said It was hard just watching them.۝

Talking about Kapoor’s character in the film, Chaubey said, “No, he is not inspired by Honey Singh! So, here is a guy who is from Punjab who goes to Birmingham and becomes a part of the underground Asian dub movement. And, as we always think, DJs at a Delhi nightclub will either be around drugs or be surrounded by it. That۪s who he is.۝ Thanks to Shahid۪s character, the music of the movie (composed by Amit Trivedi) is funky with a Bhangra dance influence. What Chaubey wishes the audience takes away from his latest project is that Punjab۪s drug problem is a national issue India is compelled to discuss. The movie hasn۪t even released and people are talking about it.”

The message that Chaubey would like to get across and for the audience to take away from Udta Punjab,۪ is that Punjab۪s drug problem is a national issue India is compelled to discuss.

Udta Punjab۪ will be on our screens on 17th June.
