Amitabh Bachchan reveals Smita Patil’s ‘Manthan’ to be restored for Cannes 2024
Amitabh Bachchan has announced that the 1976 film ‘Manthan,’ starring Smita Patil, will undergo a restoration process and be showcased in 4K resolution at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Shyam Benegal, ‘Manthan’ holds the distinction of being the sole Indian film selected for the Cannes Classic section of the festival this year.
The premiere of ‘Manthan’ at Cannes will be a momentous occasion, attended by notable figures including veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, the family of the late Smita Patil, the film’s producers, and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur from the Film Heritage Foundation.
‘Manthan’ is a significant film in Indian cinema, not only for its compelling narrative but also for its thematic exploration of social issues.

The restoration process has been an incredible experience, especially working so closely with Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani to painstakingly bring the film back to life. Almost half a century later, the power of the narrative and the compelling performances of the actors, especially Smita Patil, remains undiminished.
