Vidya’s unconventional films rule at the box office

Vidya Balan۪s latest releases ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011) and ‘Kahaani’ (2012) have both proved to be huge box office hits.

Making an unconventional film is always risky for film-makers, as these types of films are not always accepted by many of their viewers, which is why the huge success of both films had come to a surprise for many; Kahaani۪ in particular.

Enriching on how successful the film has become, Hindustan Times stated “Made forRs.5 crore, the thriller has netted around Rs 65 crore in 5 weeks_” The outletalso went on to statethat the film succeeded financially among its competition films ‘Agent Vinod’ (2012) and ۪Housefull 2′ (2012).

Vikram Malhotra, COO, Viacom 18 Motion stated It has proved that if content is strong, well presented and marketed right, even if unconventional, the gender of the protagonist is not an issue_۝

Sujoy Ghosh, the director of’Kahaani’, also remarked I hope that Kahaani will bring a new set of rules that propagate the belief that there are no rules in cinema. Backed by a producer willing to take a chance, you can be bold and brave as far as content and format goes.۝

It seems conventions are not only being tested but also transformed. It remains to be seen whetherfilm-makers will take inspiration with yet more woman-centric topics and also if they carry on being as successfulas thelast two offerings of the same genrehave proved to be.
