Surveen Chawla left her television career and stepped into Bollywood with the bold ‘Hate Story 2’(2014). It was not one ofthe quintessential debuts that one sees in Bollywood, but Chawla, in her words, is a “risk taker.” She sat down to talk about her ‘risk,’ ‘Hate Story 2’ and her future projects.

In a hearty chat with the TOI, Chawla opened up on why she chose ‘Hate Story 2,’ ‘Ugly’ (2013),and her father’s actual reaction to seeing a backless poster of her.Chawla says that while television gives you a big paycheck, the uncertainty of films, is what challenges her. “The very fact that it wasn’t an ideal debut made me sign the film. I’m a bit of a risk taker, that’s why I went ahead and quit my TV career at the peak. With TV, the lure of a big fat paycheck at the end of the month makes you feel secure but films are a field of complete uncertainty. I wanted to challenge myself and do roles of my choice.”

Chawla wouldn’t be where she is today without her family’s support, so the rumors of her family being upset over her bold scenes, were baseless, “There were rumors of my parents getting upset for doing those scenes, but I was quick to rubbish them. When my dad had gone to a multiplex in Chandigarh to watch a film, he happened to see a backless poster of mine. He immediately called me up and said, ‘Well you look hot!’ I wouldn’t have been here if it hadn’t been for their support.”

She signed ‘Ugly’ solely for the incentive of working with director Anurag Kashyap. “We shot the film before I even signed ‘Hate Story 2.’ The sole reasonfor signing ‘Ugly’ was my desire to work with Anurag Kashyap. He gets the character out of you from who you are, whichus why his characters are so real. They stand on their own. I’d give up anythingto work with him again.”

Chawla will be seen inthe upcoming, ‘Parched,’ which she feels has been one of her most beautiful acting journeys. “I am doing Parched, which isone of the most beautiful journeysI’ve hadin so many years of my work, transformingme to a great degree. The film is anexpression of what every girl wants to say. Tannishtha (Chatterjee), Radhika (Apte) and I have had the most brilliant experiences. It’s a fantasticfilmand I cannot wait for its release. I think it might travel acrossfestivals before releasing in India. I play a nautch dancer in the film. It’s bold superficially but with a lot of depth.”

Chawla will next be seen in a special appearance, in the upcoming comedy, ‘Welcome Back’ slated to release at the end of May.
