Ranbir-Akshay box office clash averted

Barfii
Ranbir Kapoor & Priyanka Chopra in 'Barfii'

Some time back BizAsia had confirmed that ‘Barfii’ would release in July along with the Saif Ali Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Cocktail’. Then there was news that the film would in fact release in August and clash with ‘Joker’ instead. The latest word officially is that ‘Barfii’ will now be the sole release on 31stAugust.

The strategy behind this release date shuffle does make perfect sense. Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha have just been seen in ‘Rowdy Rathore’, and Kumar is keen for the euphoria on that film to die down first before releasing another film (also co-starring Sinha) so soon after.

‘Joker’ will now release on 14th September, two weeks after ‘Barfii’ giving both films ample breathing space at the box office. Incidentally the 14thwas the original release date for the Kareena Kapoor starrer ‘Heroine’ but the latter has now been pushed to 21st September.

Ranbir Kapoor on his part is happy with the development as Barfii۪ is his first release after ‘Rockstar’ and a film very close to his heart. Releasing it with Joker۪ would only prove detrimental for both of the films which have been shot on huge budgets.

’Barfii’ is very close to his heart. Ranbir is playing a deaf and mute character in the film and has given one of his best performances so far. Those who have seen the rushes are already raving about his acting, which is why he wanted to promote it rightly. It۪s an unusual film and coming after Rockstar۪, which got him a lot of acclaim, it means a lot to him,۝ said a source in a news snippet to DNA India.

Barfii۪ recounts the story of Murphy (Kapoor) a deaf, mute character who can۪t pronounce his own name (hence Murphy is pronounced Barfii۪) and his love story with an autistic girl (Priyanka Chopra). The film is directed by Anurag Basu and also stars Ileana D۪Cruz as the film۪s narrator.
