Rajan Shahi on backlash over recent changes in ‘YRKKH’ on Star Plus

Veteran TV and film producer, Rajan Shahi has revealed that the future of India’s longest running Hindi fiction, ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ was hanging in the balance, which is why he decided to kill off the popular character Naira played by Shivangi Joshi.

To ramp up ratings, the makers of the show opted to bring in new character, Sirat. Along with Sirat’s introduction, came in Ranveer’s character, played by Karan Kundrra, much to viewers dismay. The show, which has long been loved by viewers for the characters of Kartik and Naira, is undergoing many changes, to keep viewers enticed.

Talking about the recent changes, Shahi spoke exclusively to Raj Baddhan on Lyca Radio’s ‘Drivetime’ show. He said, “The entire decision to kill Naira in the show was one of the biggest decisions taken. We knew the kind of reaction it would invoke…. But we had to take a blunt decision, which is that the show for the last 7-8 months we were not doing well at all [ratings]. We tried every track but the numbers stayed low. It was a worrying thing not just for me but for the broadcaster [Star Plus].”
