With the big release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much awaited ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015) having released today, news has it that all shows have been cancelled in Pune, India due to protests about the film’s story.

According to NDTV, a group from the BJP youth wing protested about the film being inaccurately based on the life of warrior prince Bajirao Peshwa and his second wife Mastani. Jayant Bhave, protest leader was reported stating, “The filmmakers have completely distorted the historical facts of the Peshwa era of the early 1700s and has actually portrayed him in an insulting manner. The people of Maharashtra virtually worship the Peshwas so we cannot tolerate what is being depicted in this film.”

He went into add, “He never had the time to fiddle with his hair and dance in public as shown in the film. Similarly, the depiction of his wife Kashibai portrayed by Priyanka Chopra is also in poor taste as the royalty never behaved in such fashion those days.”

The group had also signed a petition to have the film from releasing at all, however the Bombay High Court had turned their allegations down.
