Priyanka Chopra in legal trouble over unpaid taxes
Priyanka Chopra is facing trouble with the Income Tax Department over luxury gifts received in 2011.
During a raid conducted in 2011 by The Income Tax Department, officials discovered unpaid taxes on a Rs. 27 lakh Toyota Prius and a Rs. 40 lakh LVMH-TAG watch. Chopra approached the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal claiming both items were gifts by the companies given with love and affection, and therefore should not be taxed. The Tribunal has rejected Chopra’s argument, stating that “A company, is an artificial person and therefore does not have any emotional feeling of love and affection which is the cardinal factors for treating any transaction as gift,” Times of India reported.
This dispute is a part of a series of orders passed on 16th January, 2018, regarding four years from the 2006-07 financial year examined during the raid. Some appeals filed by Chopra are still being reviewed.
