PEMRA warns Pakistani news channels over elections coverage

Pakistan’s media regulatory body, PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) has issued a warning to all Pakistani news channels over the looming Pakistan elections.

PEMRA has asked broadcasters to air final, formal or definite results only after confirmation by the relevant returning officer.

However, if any of the result is aired, it should be with a disclaimer that the results are unofficial, incomplete and should not be considered as Final Result until announced by the Election Commission, until one hour is passed after the close of poll.

Furthermore, PEMRA has reminded media outlets to ensure its coverage remains impartial, without any discrimination to any party of candidate. It added that with the elections (on electronic media) coming to an end at midnight Monday-Tuesday (23rd and 24th July), broadcasters must avoid airing content including adverts and opinion polls that could influence or favour any political party or candidate.
