Pakistani documentary ‘How She Moves’ highlights the universal language of dance

‘How She Moves’, a dance documentary directed by Aisha Linnea and Anya Raza, will be making its UK premiere at the UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF) in London.

‘How She Moves’ pulls back the curtain on Indu Mitha’s life as one of Pakistan’s few classical dance teachers. On the eve of Pakistan’s 70th independence anniversary, the film follows the spirited 90 year-old dance guru Indu Mitha as she prepares for her students’ final performance before she retires. The film observes her feminist and secular spin on classical dance and the transformative impact it has on generations of students and audiences.

Since the film’s release in October 2020, ‘How She Moves’ has toured 26 festivals from Macau to Bolivia, and won six awards, including the Excellence in Short Documentary Filmmaking

Award at the Asian American International Film Festival, Best International Documentary at Regina International Film Festival & Award, and the Impact Award at Dance Camera North.

“As two women filmmakers, we were allowed rare access into an otherwise unseen world of women and dance in Pakistan,” say Aisha Linnea and Anya Raza, “‘How She Moves’ reflects on the universality of storytelling through dance, and how it can be used to unite communities.”
