Ofcom awards Ramadan radio licences

Ofcom has today confirmed that 29 temporary radio broadcast licences will be issued for the period of Ramadan commencing in August 2009.

Earlier this year, 16 licences were already awarded and yesterday a further 13 temporary radio broadcast licences were given following a draw.

Ofcom receives a large number of applications to broadcast during Ramadan, and in areas where more than one application is received Ofcom awards a licence by way of a draw, subject to applications satisfying the rules set out in our notes of guidance, and to frequency availability.

The temporary radio stations will broadcast to the Muslim community within a 2 mile radius of their chosen transmitter site, for the period of Ramadan and Eid.
