Netflix acquires Richie Mehta ‘Delhi Crime’ as its next original series

Netflix has acquired writer and director, Richie Mehta’s ‘Delhi Crime’ as its next Indian original series.

The seven-part police procedural thriller, will be available to subscribers from 22nd March 2019. The first season is inspired by and follows the notorious December 2012 investigation by the Delhi Police into a devastating rape of a young woman that reverberated across India and the world. Throughout seven hour-long episodes, ‘Delhi Crime’ captures the complexities of the scrutiny, the emotional toll on the investigating team, and their determination to bring the perpetrators to justice in a fraught environment.

It stars Shefali Shah (Monsoon Wedding) as police officer Vartika Chaturvedi, alongside Adil Hussain (Life of Pi, Hotel Salvation), Denzil Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Rasika Dugal (Mirzapur, Manto), Rajesh Tailang (Siddharth, Selection Day), and Yashaswini Dayama (Dear Zindagi, The Odds). It has been produced by Mumbai-based, digital-focused Golden Karavan and Crazy Rich Asians’ Ivanhoe Pictures. Golden Karavan’s Aaron Kaplan, Jeff Sagansky, Florence Sloan, Apoorva Bakshi, Pooja Kohli, and Sanjay Bachani served as executive producers, alongside John Penotti, Kilian Kerwin, and Michael Hogan for Ivanhoe Pictures, with Robert Friedland, Sidney Kimmel, and Brian Kornreich as producers.

‘Delhi Crime’ is said to be influenced by ‘American Crime Story’. After the first season, Netflix is expected to stream the second season, which is expected to go into production soon.

‘Delhi Crime’ was launched at the Sundance festival this week.
